Editing
I specialise in editorial assessments and developmental editing, sometimes known as ‘comprehensive editing’ or ‘structural editing’.
An editorial assessment often comes before a developmental edit. The main difference is that during an editorial assessment, I won’t provide detailed paragraph-by-paragraph comments but will instead give an overall view of the state of your manuscript. During a developmental edit, I will leave detailed in-text advice and amendments.
Both of these tasks involve reading your manuscript and commenting on the overall flow, as well as:
- Plotting
- Pacing
- Tone of voice
- Structure
- Character creation and development
- Scenes which may need cutting or extending
- How impactful the ending and character arcs are
Rather than delve into the minute details as a line editor or copyeditor might do, a developmental editor looks at the bigger picture and how all the different parts of your manuscript work together.
This is a good option if you have a completed manuscript but are uncertain as to whether it ‘works’. Developmental editing is the best way of finding your sense of direction before you embark on a second draft.
Prices for an assessment or editing will vary according to the depth of analysis you request and the quality and length of your manuscript. Please get in touch with your requirements in order to receive a quote for your project.
